Implementation of the CERIT-SC project started on 1st May 2011
Ministry of Educatiuon, Youth and Sports of the Czech Republic decided formally on 29th April 2011 on the funding approval for the Center CERIT Scientific Cloud project (reg. no. CZ. 1.05/3.2.00/08.0144, part of the Operational Program Research and Development for Innovations [OP VaVpI in Czech], priority axis 3, subarea 2.3 Information Infrastructure for Research and Development).
The project started on May 1st and it will last for 30 months. Total financial contribution is above 130 millions Czech Crowns (approx. 5.2 Millions €), from which the equipment makes some 103 millions Czech Crowns. 85% are provided by EU, 15% is the Czech co-financing. The budget covers cost of initial investment into technology and operational costs for the whole duration.
Transformation of the Supercomputing Center Brno
Project CERIT Scientific Cloud implements a tranformatiuon of the Supercompouting Center Brno (SCB) into a newly defined Center CERIT-SC (CERIT Scientific Cloud). SCB was a part of Institute of Computer Science at masaryk University. Since 1994 SCB served originally as the largest supercomputing and later the largest grid center of the academic community of the Czech Republic. Center CERIT-SC, being part of the national e-Infrastructure, specifically targets flexible real-time access to the computing and storage resources. The virtualized computing and storage capacity installed in the Center, accessible through novel interfaces combining grid and cloud environments, represents a unique installation in the Czech Republic and Central Europe and even wider region that provides new means to use advanced e-Infrastructure. Center's research is dedicated to cloud and grid technologies and new ways of their use and is integrated into a pan-European collaboration. Joint projects and close scientific collaboration with Center's users (partners), especially other Operation Program and ESFRI projects will lead to a development of new tools for storing and retrieval of scientific data, environments, methods and tools for computing experiments, to contribute to efficient and innovative use of information technology (and e-Infrastructure in particular) potential by national and internatonal scientific communities.
